Kathmandu's potato supply now hinges on two mountain roads, and this week both were blocked by landslides. Rain from a Bay of Bengal low-pressure system closed the Prithvi and BP highways. Deliveries to the main Kalimati market collapsed to 242 tonnes on Friday, against a normal 700 to 800 tonnes. Potato prices reacted only mildly: the wholesale average climbed 3.45% to Rs55.17 per kg, while shoppers paid Rs65 to Rs75. Tomatoes and cabbage, by contrast, jumped by 61.76% and 171.43%. The mildest reaction came from imported Indian red tubers, averaging Rs46.17, roughly nine rupees under local long red ones. Importers, wholesalers and retailers gain most from watching the road repairs, because festival and wedding demand is building at the same time. The caveat is timing: the newspaper did not say over which period the 3.45% change was measured, so the figure is best read as a short-term move.
Wholesale potato prices in the Kathmandu Valley rose this week. Landslides blocked key highways and cut vegetable deliveries to the capital.
According to the Kathmandu Post, the wholesale price of potatoes rose 3.45% to Rs55.17 per kg. Retail prices ranged from Rs65 to Rs75 per kg. Most potatoes sold in the valley are imported from India, the newspaper said.
The daily price list of the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Board shows the same average. Long red potatoes traded at Rs52–57 per kg, with an average of Rs55.17. Round red potatoes averaged Rs50.67 per kg. Red potatoes from India were the cheapest type. They sold at Rs45–48 per kg, with an average of Rs46.17.

Supply routes blocked
Heavy rain came from a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. It triggered landslides on the Prithvi Highway and the BP Highway. Both roads carry produce into the Kathmandu Valley.
The Kalimati market usually receives 700–800 tonnes of vegetables a day. On Friday, arrivals fell to 242 tonnes. On Thursday, the market had received 657 tonnes.
Other vegetables rose much faster than potatoes. Wholesale tomato prices jumped 61.76%. Cabbage prices rose 171.43%. Vegetable inflation reached 6.90% year on year. The supply cut comes as the festival and wedding season approaches, when demand usually grows.

Potatoes proved more stable than many fresh vegetables during this supply shock. Their price rise was small compared with tomatoes or cabbage. Yet prices still moved up, which shows how much the valley depends on a few road links.
The gap between potato types also matters. Indian red potatoes traded about Rs9 per kg below long red potatoes. This price gap supports demand for imported potatoes in the capital. Traders will watch whether the highways reopen before the festival peak. Longer closures could push prices higher across all potato types.
